Program Fee: $1,095. Only passengers booked through InSight Cruises will be admitted. The fee includes all your quilting needs — including notions and the use of a sewing machine and iron — will be met; four days of classes to create one of the kits from the two project options (see column 2); three one-hour, open-bar cocktail parties; a complimentary spa treatment; and after-class access to a sewing room. Our organized events only take place when we’re at sea, between 8:30am and 7:30pm.

Two Project Choices

OPTION 1: Your Imperial Diamonds
Instructor: Jean Nolte

Patchwork and borders are center stage as you create the queen-sized Imperial Diamonds quilt.

You’ll take a new look at working with strips and squares while applying the expert tips that make it a breeze. Build on the basics and learn how to ensure that your patchwork is accurate, using methods you’ll apply across your quilting adventures. Build confidence in your borders, step by step, with a professional’s techniques to fashion perfect bindings and lump-free seams.

pic of Love of Quilting Cruise Project 1Your Imperial Diamonds fabric options are enticing Timeless Treasures’ Batik Treats, 2½" x 44" strips and 10" squares in three color choices: rich Sugarplum, fresh Hard Candy, and elegant Coffee Cake. You also have the option of making a smaller throw version instead of a queen-size quilt.

Physically Challenged: The ship has a very limited number of specially equipped cabins for the Physically Challenged. Please let us know your specific needs.

Sharing: For those wishing to share a cabin with another passenger in our group in an Interior or Oceanview cabin. The prices are the same as the per person double occupancy rates.

3rd Person Rate: $499 (under 2 years old); $599 (2 and older)

Single Occupancy: If you would like to be the sole occupant of a cabin, there is a single-occupancy upcharge: 50% for all non-verandah cabins; 100% for all verandah cabins.

Port Charges, Taxes, and Gratuities:
Government taxes and cruiseline fees are approximately $127, gratuities are $11 per person per day, and there’s an InSight Cruises service charge of $100. Port charges are included in the cruise fare.

  • Get the scoop on working with slightly oversized pieces to guarantee accurate patchwork
  • Learn a unique strip piecing technique for pieced borders and sashing strips

  • Toss around ideas for quilting the finished quilt top

Recreate this amazing masterpiece (c.1860) from the archives of Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library. The legacy of Early American quilt makers blooms in Jewels of the Garden, a reproduction of a work in Winterthur Museum’s collections.

pic of Love of Quilting Cruise Project 2You will be surprised at how easily the simple method of English paper piecing lets you put an intricate design together. Make the most of precious quilting time with speed piecing, foundation piecing, and appliqué.

Whether you choose to make a bed-sized beauty or smaller wall quilt version, Jewels of the Garden will be a cherished accomplishment. You can opt to work in Antique (closely replicating the original) or Modern Jewel Bright colorways.
 

With Gail Kessler’s instruction and inspiration, you’ll:

  • Learn hand and machine techniques for appliqué and English paper piecing
  • Produce fast, foolproof foundation piecing
  • Discover the process of speed piecing
