MAYAN RUINS

KOHUNLICH
December 9, 2011

The Kohunlich Mayan ruins are situated in a secluded jungle setting near the border of Belize. Relax for the approximately two-hour air-conditioned motor coach ride to the ruins as our guide explains what you will see there. View detailed Mayan temples combined with the lush green manicured gardens. See the Temple of the Large Masks, the Plaza of the Acropolis, the Plaza of the Estelas, Plaza Hundida, and Plaza Merwin. Kohunlich may have been one of the most important sites in the lower Peten region. In today’s world, Kohunlich’s broad range of architecture, natural beauty and expansive, uncrowded seclusion sets it apart from the more widely toured sites. After the tour of the site, we head to a local restaurant for lunch before starting the drive (approximately one hour) back to the ship.

CHACCHOBEN
December 9, 2011

Visit Chacchoben — the Place of Red Corn — in the company of experts in Mayan history. Explore the ancient ruins learning about the temples and other structures only recently partly uncovered in the rain forest. You will have time to climb the Gran Basamento taking you above tree level. Here archaeologists found ceremonial offerings dating to around 1000 BC. Our guide will also explain about the wildlife and medicinal plants that are used by the modern-day descendents of the ancient Mayan people. Our tour includes bilingual guides, air-conditioned transfers, and refreshments.

HALF MOON CAY, BAHAMAS — Monday, December 5

Holland America Line’s pristine private island offers everything you need for a day of play in paradise: a two-mile crescent of perfect beach; an interior lagoon; private beachside cabanas with showers, misters, and butlers; watersports and activities, including a children’s aqua park, nature hikes, and a personal watercraft course. In spite of HAL’s use of 2% of this 1,700-acre island, it is so pristine and unspoiled that it has been designated a Wild Bird Reserve by the Bahamian National Trust.
